Lucas Atrak beaten to death at Värmdö: Court of Appeal’s verdict

Lucas Atrak, 17, was beaten to death when he stood up for his friend in Värmdö.
A 16-year-old boy was acquitted of murder in the district court.
Now the judgment of the Court of Appeal is announced.

Lucas Atrak was treated for a month in intensive care before dying from his injuries.

The 17-year-old boy was badly beaten at a party in Värmdö on the night of August 9 last year. Lucas Atrak had then written to a now 16-year-old boy and asked him to apologize for strangling a friend.

The 16-year-old, who was 15 at the time, then threatened Lucas Atrak with his life and sought him out. Even though Lucas Atrak had backed down and apologized, the 16-year-old attacked him.

Acquitted of murder

The perpetrator pointed a knife at his throat, assaulted him and hit his head with the handle of the knife, among other things. When Lucas Atrak was lying on the ground, the 16-year-old continued to kick him.

The 16-year-old was initially charged with murder, but the Nacka district court instead convicted him of aggravated manslaughter and aggravated assault. The court held that the boy did not intend to kill Lucas Atrak. The punishment was ten months of youth supervision.

The verdict was appealed to the Svea Court of Appeal, which on Thursday confirmed and followed the district court’s line.

Fact: Youth supervision

Youth supervision may be sentenced if neither youth care nor youth services are sufficiently intrusive sanctions, taking into account the punishment value and nature of the crime and the young person’s previous criminality. The detailed design of the supervision is decided by the Prison Service.
