Lowry’s margin of victory over the runners-up, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and Spain’s John Rahm, ended up being a blow. Lowry did not make a single bogey during the tournament’s three rounds. The competition was played at Wentworth Golf Club in the south-west of the British capital – a stone’s throw from Windsor Castle which was one of the official residences of the recently deceased Queen Elizabeth II.
– It has been a sad week for everyone in this country, and around the world. What Queen Elizabeth was, and what she represented, it was amazing. She was fantastic, says Lowry in the victory interview and continues:
— I thought golf should be played because I felt it would honor her life. I think we did. It was special.
The PGA Championship suspended play following the news of the Queen’s passing on Thursday.
On Saturday morning, play resumed, partly with the start of the second round, partly because the few players finished the first round before embarking on the second. The competition was also shortened to 54 holes in order to finish playing over the weekend.
In addition, two minutes’ silence was observed on Saturday morning in honor of the late Queen, and the flags at Wentworth were flown at half-mast.
