Lowest electricity consumption in 30 years – this affects your electricity price

During 2022, the Swedes were hit by very high electricity prices, which meant that electricity consumption decreased significantly.

The new figures for 2023 show that households and industries appear to be continuing to save – despite prices being more normal.

The savings have also produced large surpluses and exports of electricity.

Last year, Swedish electricity exports were historically high, 28.5 TWh, which corresponds to all the electricity from three nuclear power reactors.

Today, the concern about “shortage of electricity” is not about the total amount of electricity produced, but the risk of power shortage. Thus the risk that at certain vulnerable times of the year there is a lack of capacity to deliver electricity to the right places at the same time.

Hear SVT’s reporter Johan Zachrisson Winberg explain how record low electricity consumption affects the price of electricity.
