The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has updated the guidelines for protective hunting of wolves. The level for when protective hunting can be granted after attacks on sheep and goats is lowered from four to two attacks in an area during a 12-month period.
The same rules apply to attacks on dogs. In certain situations, mainly when other preventive measures have already been taken, protective hunting can be granted already after an attack, according to the updated guidelines.
It was in July 2023 that the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency was commissioned by the government to draw up updated guidelines for protective wolf hunting since the population has increased in number and distribution across Sweden.
“We are currently analyzing the new guidelines, but can state that this is a step in the right direction,” says Rural Affairs Minister Peter Kullgren in a press release.
The updated guidance should serve as support for the county administrative boards in their decision-making.
