Municipal officials are reporting a low level of combustible gas was released and vented in Wheatley on Friday.
The systems, procedures and venting stack “worked according to design and the gas was effectively flared off,” stated a release, adding that at no point was there any danger to the public.
Chatham-Kent fire and emergency services provided additional resources and air monitoring around the perimeter of the evacuation zone.
A second release occurred later that evening and steps were taken to ensure safety, including igniting the flare stack to control the gas and staffing up the site for overnight observation, officials said.
By 9 am on Saturday, gas levels had reduced to allow the stack to be extinguished and the on-site team returned to regular monitoring.
“We are pleased that the mitigation equipment/procedures on-site are working exactly as planned and are confident that the current evacuation zone remains secure,” said director of public works Ryan Brown.
