Low in calories and digestive, this drink is perfect after holiday meals

Low in calories and digestive this drink is perfect after

You can drink it for example 30 minutes later.

Coconut water, not coconut milk, is the liquid inside a young coconut. The milk, thicker and smoother, is extracted from the pulp of the fruit. Coconut water is a drink that deserves to be known. It is very hydrating and less strong in taste than coconut milk. Coconut water is low in calories (15.2 kcal per 100 g) and very low in sugar (2.48 g per 100 g).

A copious, heavy meal or one too rich in fat creates gastric acidity or even acid reflux. “Coconut water is basifying, so it will fight against this excess gastric acidity” explains Sophie Pihan, naturopath. Coconut water thus helps maintain the functions of the digestive system by maintaining gastric secretions at a good level, the latter serving to properly digest and assimilate food. “Coconut water is ideal after a hearty meal or a festive meal. Non-greasy, it promotes digestion by supporting gastric secretions and digestive mucus. It does not accelerate transit, even if it should not be no longer abuse it” warns Sophie Pihan. Coconut water is draining for the body. It helps to detoxify the body, by optimally ridding it of its toxins, particularly produced by copious holiday meals. “Coconut water is rehydrating, but hydration is the basis of good digestion”she recalls. In fact, coconut water is made up of almost 96% water. This water is called isotonic, because its composition is close to that of blood plasma. It is therefore easily assimilated by the body.

Coconut water is also antibacterial: the lauric acid it contains acts effectively on bacteria, microbes and fungi. Drinking coconut water in winter contributes to the proper functioning of the immune system, essential for fighting winter infections. Coconut water is easily found in supermarkets, in organic sections or directly in organic stores. “Choose UHT water and therefore pasteurized and without added sugar” advises our naturopath. You sometimes find it under the name “coconut water”.

There is no ideal time to consume coconut water. “It can also be consumed before the meal, as an aperitif, or after the meal to provide hydration and freshness. In all cases, it can be enjoyed fresh or even at room temperature and it is very light in taste. You can possibly use it in a smoothie with frozen red fruits and bananas If you drink coconut water in the form of a smoothie, however, I advise waiting until digestion is well underway, i.e. 30 to 60 minutes after the meal. .”
