On November 11, a young contender from “L’amour est dans le pré” revealed that she was suffering from a rare cancer, the diagnosis of which was reportedly made during the filming of the show. What is Ewing’s sarcoma? Details from Dr Gérald Kierzek, medical director of Doctissimo.
It wasn’t the kind of announcement viewers were expecting. Love is in the meadow. In the show of November 11, 2024, Flavie, 21 years old, Valentin’s suitor, revealed that she was suffering from a rare cancer, Ewing’s sarcoma precisely.
Cancer discovered during filming
The young woman learned of her condition while filming the show. “A week after I left Valentin’s farm, the surgeon called me to quickly make an appointment. I had sarcoma. I collapsed. L’oncologist told me right away that there would be chemo. I had undergone surgery for a tumor that was considered benign before participating in the show.”explained Flavie at the Parisian. A few months later, the young woman who followed her 5 month treatment.
She now wants to talk about her cancer so that her journey can help with prevention and encourage people to consult a doctor in case of “doubts about your health. “Even young, no one is safe” underlines the young woman.
What is Ewing sarcoma?
Dr Gérald Kierzek, medical director of Doctissimo, tells us more about this cancer from which the candidate suffered. “Ewing sarcoma is a rare type of cancer (80 to 100 cases in France) which develops mainly in bones or soft tissues. It mainly affects adolescents and young adults, with a male predominance, and most often develops in the long bones, pelvis, ribs or back. spine“.
This causes various symptoms such as:
- Bone pain: the most common symptom. The pain is generally progressive, intensifies over time and persists despite analgesics, prompting the patient to consult. The pain can worsen at night and wake you up;
- A visible swelling or mass : swelling or swelling may be observed at the tumor site;
- A fatigue and weight loss;
- A bone fracture for no apparent reason: the bone weakened by the tumor can fracture easily.
Ewing’s sarcoma (or peripheral neuroectodermal tumor) is usually located in the bone. Extraosseous locations are rarer, and the primary cutaneous location is exceptional. But this is apparently the case for Flavie. According to literature data, cutaneous Ewing sarcomas have a much more favorable outcome than bone Ewing sarcomas.
Can we cure it?
There are now more than 70 types of sarcomas, so treatment varies depending on the type and its location. “But a three-phase treatment is generally recommended”says our expert.
- Neo-adjuvant (pre-operative) chemotherapy for approximately 9 months;
- Local treatment: surgery and/or radiotherapy;
- Post-operative chemotherapy.
The hope of recovery is important. “Ewing’s sarcoma has a 70% long-term survival rate for localized tumors, with a more favorable prognosis for young patients (under 15 years old) and girls. concludes our doctor.
