ALS-sick composer Stefan Nilsson chose to end his life – now his wife, Lotta Hasselquist Nilsson, tells about the last hours together with her husband.

The advanced ALS disease finally meant that the musician Stefan Nilsson could not live anymore.
“I, Stefan Nilsson, hereby decide to end my life,” he wrote in a letter last May and explained that he intends to seek help to end his life.
His wife Lotta Hasselquist Nilsson is now talking about their last hours together.
– It was one of the worst things you can imagine. I don’t wish anyone to be with the period of illness, the realization of what will happen or to see the loved one in pain
and not being able to do anything, she says in Nyhetsmorgon.
– But we did everything we could. We did fine. He wanted to die in his bed, she continues.
Lotta tells us that Stefan had directed “exactly” how it would go.

The last half hour
For the last half hour they lay on the bed and thanked each other for life, love and the fantastic time together.
– In this fantastic journey of our life, it has been like a fairy tale.
– You understand when you say good morning, darling, and in five hours he will be gone. You can’t even imagine it.
“No alternative was found”
Lotta tells us that the only alternative was for him to continue suffering from the disease.
– At night he lay screaming in his sleep, but during the day he held together because he was a warrior.
She now hopes that there will be a debate around the issue of active euthanasia. Something that is therefore not allowed in Sweden.
– I hope that there will be a debate and that the politicians will take hold of this. It is time to change this law. It is not worthy in 2024 that people should suffer to death.
Stefan has narrated his fate to documentary filmmaker Tom Alandh in two films and the latest, “Min död er mine”, was released last week.
Stefan Nilsson is known for having written music for a number of television series and films – one of the most famous is the song Gabriella’s song from the film Som som i himmelen.
