Aragorn is probably one of the most important and popular characters in Peter Jackson’s entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. Played by Viggo Mortensen, the ranger became a fighter and king over the course of the fantasy films and had numerous iconic battle scenes and strategic dialogues. After Mortensen did not return as Aragorn in Jackson’s Hobbit prequel trilogy, the door may be open for his character in the newly announced project: the Gollum-centric spin-off The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
However, whether this is Viggo Mortensen’s return The actor now addressed this in an interview. Can we look forward to seeing our Aragorn of hearts again soon?
Reunion with Aragorn in The Hunt for Gollum? Viggo Mortensen is not averse
As Viggo Mortensen revealed to GQ, he would actually not be averse to traveling to New Zealand again and slipping into his Aragorn costume:

Nevertheless, Viggo Mortensen sets out an important condition that would have to be met for his return as Aragorn in The Hunt for Gollum:

In fact, Mortensen himself calls a spade a spade in the interview. As much as he – and perhaps many Lord of the Rings fans – would like to see him return as Aragorn in the planned Gollum film, the actor’s age is a major problem. The Hunt for Gollum would be set roughly parallel to the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and thus could play between Bilbo’s birthday and Frodo’s departure for Rivendell.
Even though Aragorn had already passed his 80th birthday at this point, his Númenórean ancestry gave him an above-average lifespan – which is why he could be played by the much younger Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, who was in his 40s at the time. Letting Viggo Mortensen take on Aragorn’s role again at the age of 65 could lead to continuity problems for Mortensen and the film. Digitally rejuvenating him, on the other hand, could seem too artificial for such an extensive role.
Gollum actor and director Andy Serkis already revealed to Deadline that he would not rule out bringing back former Lord of the Rings stars for the film. He explained that “everything still open” and he was so early in the film’s development “do not commit to anything” wool.
Whether we will see Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn on the big screen again, or whether the iconic role will be played by a younger actor, remains to be seen. The Hunt for Gollum is said to 2026 into cinemas worldwide.
