Not only the anime The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of the Rohirrim, which will be released in cinemas this year, will bring Middle Earth back to the big screen. Warner is planning several new live-action adventures in Tolkien’s fantasy world. The first of these will be The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum who apparently already has a second star returnee has in mind.
Gandalf actor Ian McKellen has been asked to return to Lord of the Rings
Everything we know about the new Gollum film suggests that it will feature many familiar names in front of and behind the camera. Andy Serkis will direct and play the motion capture lead. Peter Jackson will produce. Apart from that, all that was known so far was that the film will focus on the Perspective of the two-faced ring bearer before Bilbo and Frodo. The translated title of the “Hunt for Gollum” also suggests a time when Aragorn is looking for the creature who has dangerous knowledge about the hobbits in the Shire. But another popular character has also revealed their potential return: Ian McKellen as Gandalf.
Although it is still some time until the release of the new Lord of the Rings film, Sir Ian McKellen already told The Big Issue:
The enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings does not seem to be waning. I can’t say much more than that. I have only been told that there will be new films and Gandalf will be there and they hope I will play him. I don’t know when. The script hasn’t been written yet, so you’d better hurry up.
Ian McKellen already has experience with his return as Gandalf, because after the Balrog fight in Part 1 he not only returned as Gandalf the White in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, but also remained loyal to Peter Jackson in the iconic role in the Hobbit trilogy ten years later.
The 85-year-old actor is currently recovering from a fall from a stage during a theatre performance in London, but three months ago he already expressed his keen interest in donning the grey wizard’s cloak and long beard again, with the ironic addition “if I’m still alive”.
When will the Lord of the Rings movie with Gollum and Gandalf be released?
Currently, the cinema release of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is 2026 If the new film keeps up the Lord of the Rings tradition, it will probably be released shortly before Christmas.
