What are the grave fiends? The ghostly creatures, also called grave wights in some German translations, live in the hills of Middle Earth. They cannot stay in the sunlight, but at night they appear as floating shadows with glowing eyes. In JRR Tolkien’s first Lord of the Rings volume, The Fellowship of the Ring *, the hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin are attacked by grave wights in the Old Forest shortly after their escape from the Shire, immobilized and carried off to their tomb. Only Tom Bombadil, who is called to help, can save them.

Neither Peter Jackson nor Ralph Bakshi showed the grave monsters in their Lord of the Rings film adaptations. Only the largely unknown Russian film adaptation from 1991 attempted to depict them, but only to a limited extent.
