Lord of the Rings and King Kong fight for the title of “Worst Game of 2023”

A candidate for the worst game of 2023 comes from Hamburg: The Lord of the Rings – Gollum received terrible reviews on Steam and Metacritic when it was released in May. But a new King Kong game is now competing with it: Skull Island: Rise of Kong. True Gollum haters don’t want to take that lying down.

Where is Gollum? The adventure from Hamburg was supposed to be a AAA game from Germany in May 2023, but was a complete failure and ended the development work of the highly acclaimed studio Daedalic, which had built a good name in Germany for years with great adventures.

An insider report detailed how the failed game came about. Sad low point: An apology letter to fans in which the game’s title was misspelled was said to have been created by the publisher using the AI ChatGPT. The developers didn’t know anything about it:

  • Gollum currently has 35% positive reviews on Steam.
  • At Metacritic it has a disastrous user score of 1.2/10 points on the PC.
  • They wanted €50 for the game when it was released.
  • Lord of the Rings: Gollum was poorly received – HandOfBlood plays it anyway, tries really hard, even plays in cosplay

Where is the terrible King Kong game?

The new game “Skull Island. Rise of King came to Steam on October 17th and now seems to be doing similarly terribly. Many people find it particularly bold that €40 is being asked for the game.

  • Has on Steam Skull Island” 36% positive reviews – most of which were probably written ironically.
  • But on Metacritic the game now has 3.6/10 reviews instead of the previous 1.2/10 points. So not so bad anymore.
  • How is the duel going?? As the site Dexerto suspects, the King Kong game’s relatively positive score on Metacritic stems from the fact that users probably want to ensure that Gollum remains the worst game of 2023.

Some reviews here are written sarcastically:

  • A 10/10 point review has the comment: “I will now play the giant monkey forever and ever. It’s the greatest monkey game ever.”
  • Another wrote: “This is the best game I’ve ever played. I wish Elden Ring was this good.”
  • Launch trailer for Skull Island: Rise of Kong

Pranksters still give positive reviews to even terrible games

Were there such reviews for Gollum too? Yes, Gollum also had some positive reviews on Steam that were clearly sarcastic.

This is how a user on Steam probably rated Gollum in role prose as Gollum:

“Nasty, fat developer should have let the game mature longer, then it would be fresh and fidgety and not so nasty. So it’s no longer worth 15 thalers. Gollum Gollum!”

Another player praised the “immersive story-telling” and a frame rate that sometimes even exceeds 9 FPS. He asks: What more could a Gollum gamer ask for?

Apparently no game is so bad that you can’t still find something good about it. If only to make another game look even worse.

Bad games have their own charm:
