While retinol is one of today’s favorite cosmetic ingredients, it shouldn’t be used lightly. Here are the two retinol creams recommended by a dermatologist.
Have you heard of retinol? It is an active form of vitamin A that smoothes skin texture, reduces signs of aging and effectively combats dark spots.
A “star” active ingredient in cosmetics, which continues to seduce men and women looking for a “rejuvenating” effect. To make the most of its benefits, Dr. Carmen Castilla, dermatologist, gave Vogue US magazine her list of favorite products.
Retinol, an ingredient with multiple effects
Retinol is so popular because it helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin – the primary factors responsible for skin tone – but also reduces pigment spots, wrinkles and fine lines. This powerful antioxidant also prevents sebum from clogging pores, smoothes skin texture and improves its texture. It therefore helps to achieve a more even and radiant complexion.
Interesting detail: in its natural state, vitamin A (retinol) is found in butter, egg yolk and even cod liver oil.
According to Carmen Castilla, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, this selection should not be made lightly. The products chosen must in fact respect a certain percentage of retinol concentration.Generally speaking, retinol concentrations range from 0.025 to 1%. At first, it is advisable to use the lower percentage, especially for dry or sensitive skin.“.
In fact, retinol can be associated with side effects such as skin irritation, redness and peeling.People who already use retinol regularly or who do not have skin sensitivity issues may benefit from products containing higher concentrations of retinol, such as 0.5 to 1.0%.” she confides.
Faced with these potential risks (and the countless retinol-based products available on the shelves), the expert recommends favoring the following two creams:
- The cream “SkinMedica Age Defense Retinol Complex 25”. The advantage of this formula? Packed with antioxidants, it fights free radicals that damage the skin. It is also part of a range with increasing dosage, so “you can gradually increase the concentration as your skin gets used to using retinol” explains Dr. Castilla.
- Avène RetrinAL 0.1 intensive cream. This is an ideal option for beginners. It is gentle and will not cause irritation.” she explains. In addition, she adds, it also contains powerful antioxidants that are effective in preventing damage caused by free radicals.
