Looking back, “I would have played it differently”

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Gary Oldman made his debut into the wizarding world. He then played Harry’s godfather Sirius Black in the fourth, fifth and eighth films, who is initially introduced as a threat and then matures into a father replacement. But while many fans celebrate his portrayal of Sirius, Gary Oldman himself can’t think of much good about his performance in retrospect.

From the villain in The Fifth Element to Commissioner Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy to his Oscar-winning performance as Churchill in Darkest Hour, Gary Oldman has played many memorable roles. Of course, Harry Potter fans will forever associate him with Sirius Black. In the podcast Happy Sad Confused (Minute 15), the actor reflected very soberly on his appearance there.

I think my work in it is very mediocre. I really do. If I like Alan [Rickman als Professor Snape] would have read the books and had I known what was coming, I might have been one step ahead. I really think so then I would have played it differently.

In general, Gary Oldman believes that you should always keep growing as an actor. And since the last Harry Potter film was twelve years ago, the English character actor should have grown quite a bit by now:

Just a few weeks ago, Gary Oldman looked back on his career on The Drew Barrymore Show and explained that his roles in Batman and Harry Potter inspired him “rescued” because as a divorced father in his early 40s, they offered him the opportunity to film in his home country instead of having to travel long distances to distant locations. On top of that “with the least amount of work and for the most money”.

His family certainly thanked him for that. Just like the Potterheads and Gary Oldman fan Daniel Radcliffe, who, unlike the star, were very happy with his portrayal of Sirius.
