A total of 47,000 people were imprisoned in the camp during the Second World War, most of them for acts of resistance against the German occupier. Hunger, forced labor and abuse were the order of the day. A total of 650 people died, more than half of whom were executed around the camp. On April 19, 1945, Camp Amersfoort was handed over to the Red Cross.
