A long-standing principal with the Lambton Kent District School Board recently achieved an educational milestone of her own.

Erin Van De Wiele earned her doctorate in educational leadership from Western University, according to a board media release.
She initially received an honors bachelor of science in animal biology and a master of science in livestock nutrition from the University of Guelph, followed by a bachelor of education from the University of Windsor.
She spent two years as a professor at Ridgetown College before transitioning to an elementary school teacher for five years.
“Her diverse experiences have provided her with a unique perspective on the learning needs of students,” the release stated.
For the past 17 years, Erin has held various leadership roles. including vice-principal at Tecumseh elementary school and Tilbury Area elementary school, and as principal for 14 years at a number of Lambton Kent schools, including Thamesville Area Central, Victor Lauriston, McNaughton Ave, Lambton Kent Virtual, and currently, Naahii Ridge elementary schools .

“Erin’s motivation to better understand and serve students and families impacted by trauma emerged during her early years as a principal. Her dedication to fostering a supportive learning environment has influenced her leadership style and personal life,” the release added.
“Through her doctoral research, which focused on balancing the equation by implementing trauma-informed practices for equity in student achievement, Erin emphasized the importance of addressing students’ fundamental needs before engaging with higher-order learning.”
Van De Wiele also contributes to the professional development of her fellow educators, with the aim of enhancing leadership capacity and advocacy for equity-deserving students and families throughout the province, particularly through her involvement in the Ontario Principals’ Council additional qualifications program.
She credited her success to the support, understanding and guidance from her colleagues, educators and school community, as well as her family.
