Long considered out of fashion, this comfortable swimsuit is making a comeback this summer – it rivals one-pieces

Long considered out of fashion this comfortable swimsuit is making

Fed up with traditional one- or two-piece swimsuits? This alternative model, popularized in the 2000s, is this season’s must-have.

Every summer, fashionistas and other holidaymakers set themselves the same challenge: finding the perfect swimsuit. As the warm weather approaches, each of them spends several hours scouring stores or surfing the internet in the hope of finding the rare gem. Several questions then arise: one-piece, bikini or trikini? Low-cut or not too much? Bustier or strappy? Sexy or sportswear? What material? What colour? Once the answer to all these questions has been found, it remains to choose among the thousands of products available on the market.

But with the arrival of the beautiful 2024 season, an old model is making a comeback at the top of trends. Comfortable, elegant and above all suitable for all body types, it was acclaimed by Tiktok fashionistas to the point of going viral and accumulating more than 85 million videos about it. The tankini, this two-piece swimsuit consisting of briefs and a tank top, is this summer’s must-have. Invented in 1990 by American designer Anne Cole then seen as a little too old-fashioned at the end of the 2010s, it is now being reinvented in all colors and shapes.

A jersey adaptable to all situations

More or less long and loose depending on tastes and needs, this swimsuit, which is much more covering than a bikini, allows those who wear it to protect themselves from the sun while avoiding the disadvantages of a one-piece swimsuit. The favorite model of surfers and pin-ups has already been adopted by Chanel, who imagines it in a sequined version, and by the Emilia Wickstead label, which envisions it as tight-fitting and decorated with a shirt collar.

Abandoned for the bikini for a few years, the tankini is far from having said its last word since it still represents 30% of swimsuit sales! This summer, it is marketed by brands like H&M, Pain de Sucre, Rip Curl and Cupshe. The super practical model, which can be worn over crochet pants or denim shorts when leaving the beach, is even one of the key pieces of the collaboration between Undiz and the cosmetics brand Nyx.
