“If you want to commit crime here in Ontario, if you want to wreak havoc on our streets, we have room for you in our jail,” solicitor general Michael Kerzner Said from inside the elgin -middlesex detention center (EMDC).

Kerzner visit the provincial jail to announce the Completion of A Renovation Adding 110 New Beds for Minimum and Medium-Risk Inmates at EMDC’s Regional Intermittent Center.

“Not only will this add more capacity to our correction system, but it will also create up to 45 new, good-paying jobs in the london are for those eager to serve their community and keep their neighbourhoods safe,” Said Kerzner, Flanked by Corrections and Officers The Announcement.

The Renovation at the provincial jail is part of the progressive conservative government’s plan, first announced by kenzner outside emdc last year, to add 630 additional beds and as many as 200 more staff to Ontario’s adult Correctional Centers.

Kerzner Didn’t Provide a cost for the renovation at the London Jail, where inmates awaiting bail hearings, Sentencing and Those Serving Less Than Two Years Are Held.

The Solicitor General and His Team Have Been Working With Officials from the Ontario Public Service Union (opseu), The Union Reprresenting EMDC Employees, To Hear How Aging Infrastructure and Understaffing Challenge Corrections Staff, Said Janet Laverty, Co-Chair of the Ministry Employeee COMMITTEE.

“They’ve created a forum to provide valuable front-line perspective and i look forward to continue these conversations,” She Said of the dialogue.

“Every day, Correctional Staff Are Challenged to Effectively Holding A SAFE Environment For Inmates and Staff Alike…. When the same number of staffs are supervising up to twice as many inmates as the facility is designed to hold, it made it virtually impossible to monitorce that is happening.

Opened in 1977, EMDC Has Been Plagued by Problems included Drug Use, Violence, Overcrowding and A Lack of Programming. Twenty-Three Inmates have died at the jail since 2009.

In 2023, the province agreed to pay $ 33 million to 17,000 past and present inmates as part of a class-action settally over conditions at the jail.
