The current star of League of Legends is 22-year-old mid laner Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon. He achieved a feat at LoL Worlds 2023 that no one before him could achieve, not even the legendary Faker. Chovy has qualified for the Worlds playoffs 5 times in a row. He is only 22 years old.
Why is the record special? Before Chovy, no one had managed to make it to the LoL Worlds playoffs 5 times in a row. Because this requires a high level of playing strength in the team and extreme consistency: You have to prevail 5 times in your own region, go to the Worlds and then still be strong enough to get through the group phase:
Played with 4 different teams, but with success every time
This is what sets Chovy apart: For Chovy, the record is also special because he managed to qualify with different teams: the first three times he managed it with actual “underdog” teams where he had to bear the brunt: Griffin, DragonX and Hanwha Life were rather outsiders from 2018 to 2020, but full of great talent.
Qualifying with his current team, Gen G., isn’t that much of a surprise. They are considered one of the favorites to win the title.
This makes Chovy the new star in LoL: Chovy plays midlane, which is usually the most prestigious position in LoL and is traditionally looked after because it plays aggressive heroes who can rack up a lot of kills.
Chovy has built a remarkable reputation as “Our Lord and Savior Chovy” in recent years through his sheer playing ability and is in impressive form again in 2023. At Worlds, he posted a 14.3 KDA in just 3 games and was involved in 73% of his teams’ kills.
Before the Worlds, he just set a record in South Korea and won gold at the Asian Games.
