LoL: USA loses its most important team

One of the oldest esports teams in the world is changing its League of Legends region. As announced by TSM CEO Andy Dinh on Twitter, TSM is moving out of the LCS to another “Tier 1” region. The reason he gives is finally being able to win a world championship.

Founded in 2011 in the USA, Team SoloMid features esports teams in many different games. The team started out with League of Legends, and that’s where they’ve had most of their success.

What is Team SoloMid planning? Andy Dinh, the CEO of TSM, published a video on Twitter about a future region change of his “League of Legends” team.

  • In 2024, TSM is scheduled to leave the American LoL league LCS after more than a decade.
  • The team wants to move to a different “Tier 1” region.
  • The possible regions are the LPL (China), the LCK (Korea) and the LEC (Europe).
  • What are the reasons? In his Twitter video, Andy Dinh explains that he wants to go back to the beginnings of TSM and “do everything to be the best”. He tells how proud he is of the fans and the championships he has won.

In the second half of the video, he explicitly talks about the League of Legends World Championship and that his team never managed to win the Worlds. He explicitly justifies that the change should ensure that TSM wins a world championship.

It’s super sad to lose TSM who have defined the league for years

Why is TSM the most important team for USA?

  • TSM won 7 championships in the LCS and qualified for the playoffs 18 times.
  • Over the years, many well-known professionals have belonged to TSM. Including Bjergsen, WildTurtle, Doublelift or Dyrus.
  • TSM has been a global leader in social media and is one of the most followed esports teams.
  • Despite its success in the LCS, TSM never won a world championship.
  • But the last 2 years at the LCS didn’t go well for TSM either. The 2022 and 2023 LCS finished them in the bottom half of the table.
  • While mourning the loss of such a team, caster Isaac CB also mentions a change from the previously glorious team (via Twitter):

While it’s super sad to lose TSM, who have defined the league for years, I’ve felt for a long time that we lost them and it’s obvious that TSM didn’t care about the LCS anymore.

How does the switch work? TSM has to sell its slot in the LCS. In 2018, TSM paid almost 9.25 million euros for a slot at the LCS. And now, according to Dot Esports, they want a sum of over 18 million euros.

Not that big a sum if you consider that Riot sold such a slot in 2019 for almost 30 million euros.

The biggest LoL team bet on crypto scammers in 2021 and had to fire people as a result.

Which region will it be? As the Dot Esports site writes, the assumptions lie with the Chinese LPL. According to a reporter, there were talks between TSM and the organizers of the LPL in November 2022 about a possible change.

We have to wait until November for Worlds 2023. However, this year’s MSI has already ended and one LoL team in particular showed how strong it is.
