LoL: the most unpopular champion slips from 167th place into the top 10

The champion Skarner in League of Legends has been one of the most unpopular in the game, but with patch 14.7 that suddenly changed and brought him into the top 10.

Which champion is this? This is Skarner, who statistically has had the lowest pick rate among players recently. However, that has changed today, because with the new patch 14.7 the champion has even made it to number 7 of the most played champions (via op.gg)

Why is Skarner played more often? The main reason for this is probably the new patch 14.7, which brought extensive revisions to the champion. Skarner’s abilities have undergone a major overhaul:

  • With his Q “Shattered Earth” he rips a boulder out of the ground that can boost his attacks and be fired.
  • Skarner gains a shield with his Seismic Bastion W and triggers an earthquake that deals damage and slows enemies.
  • With his E, “Ixtal’s Impulse”, he can rush forward. If he collides with a champion or large monster, he will throw them against the nearest wall, dealing damage and stunning them.
  • Skarner’s R, Impales, lashes out its spikes to suppress enemy champions. Oppressed victims are dragged along by Skarner as he moves.
  • In addition to Skarner’s abilities, his skins have also been adjusted.

How is the rework going? The new changes don’t seem to be entirely convincing so far. According to statistics site UGG, Skarner has one of the lowest win rates in the entire game so far at just 39.03%.

So the developers may be forced to make some adjustments very soon to continue making the champion more attractive to players.

What other changes are there? The lore of Skarner has also been revised. Riot’s goal was to create a consistent narrative for all of Runeterra.

In a YouTube video with LoL’s senior writer, Skarner is known in Ixtal as one of the longest-serving and founding members of the ruling caste, the Yun Tal. The Champion hears “whispers” urging him to end Ixtal’s isolation, which is currently causing him to become paranoid.

A new lore that causes confusion

Reactions from the community: Riot’s reinterpretation of Brackern lore was met with mixed feelings from fans, particularly regarding its connection to Hextech’s origins.

One of the community’s main criticisms is that there are still too many questions unanswered. The user “meshgate6836” writes that there are still unanswered questions about the Hextech aspect and it would be a good idea to answer some of these questions in… I don’t know… some kind of developer blog.
