LoL Swarm: 5 tips for beginners

The new PvE mode in League of Legends is very reminiscent of popular games like Vampire Survivors. To make it easier for you to get started with this new mode, we at MeinMMO have put together a beginner’s guide.

The new PvE mode Swarm was released on July 17th together with the new champion Aurora. In this mode, which is strongly reminiscent of popular hits such as Vampire Survivors, you fight alone or with up to three friends against a huge horde of monsters.

Especially at the beginning, if you haven’t played similar titles before, the mode can quickly become overwhelming. We’ve put together some tips to make getting started in Swarm easier.

Use the skills

This tip may sound very banal at first, because of course it makes sense to use your skills E and R. However, it is important in Swarm that you do not use your skills in the same way as in League of Legends.

In LoL, you’re probably used to using your abilities carefully and not immediately when they become available. In Swarm, things are a little different and you should use your abilities frequently. Since there are cooldowns, it makes sense, at least with your ultimate ability, to only use it when there is a larger mass of monsters around you.

Don’t be afraid of harm

To win a round in LoL Swarm, you have to survive for 15 minutes before you get to the boss fight, which looks different depending on the map. During this time, you will inevitably take damage. If you play solo, you have to be more careful, and walls in particular can become a big problem. More on that later.

Nevertheless, especially if you have unlocked the healing upgrade, you will constantly regenerate your life, so a little damage is not fatal. It only becomes problematic when you are surrounded by monsters.

In multiplayer, however, you can take the damage you suffer a little more calmly. If you are overrun and defeated by the monsters, it is possible to be revived by a friend. You can even use this as a strategy to get more experience points.

Spend your gold on upgrades

You mainly need gold in LoL Swarm to buy upgrades. There are a total of 15 upgrades that you can purchase:

  • Damage: Multiplies the damage
  • Armor: Reduces incoming damage
  • Maximum Life: Multiplies the maximum life
  • Healing: Restores life every second
  • Running Speed: Increases running speed
  • Pickup Radius: Increases the ERF and the pick-up range for gold
  • Area Size: Increases the area size of some weapons
  • Duration: Increases the duration of weapon and ability effects
  • Critical Hit Chance: Increases the critical hit chance for weapons that can critically hit
  • Ability Speed: Reduces the cooldown of weapons and abilities
  • Experience: Increases the experience gained
  • Projectiles: Increases the number of projectiles fired for firearms
  • Gold: Increases the money received
  • Bonus Duration: Increases the duration of Miss Fortune’s Battle Bunny bonuses
  • Anima Power: 1% damage, 1% movement speed, 1% ability speed, 1% pick-up radius per level
  • Some upgrades are only unlocked as you progress through the game, but each upgrade makes the next run easier. So it’s worth checking after each run to see if you can buy a new upgrade.

Destroy the boxes on the map

On every map you will find boxes that you can destroy, usually in corners and on walls. They always contain one of these three things:

  • gold
  • cure
  • Vacuum balls that suck up all experience on the map
  • Healing can save your life in critical moments, especially if you don’t have a passive ability that recharges your life points. The vacuum balls also give you a nice advantage and sometimes let you skip several levels at once, since you inevitably lose a lot of experience points, especially at the beginning.

It is also important to know that the boxes regenerate over time. So don’t be afraid to destroy the boxes in the early game and, if possible, remember the places where you can find healing.

Watch out for walls and chokepoints

You’ll quickly get the hang of how to best move around the map. It can be helpful, especially at the beginning, to avoid bottlenecks or not to circle around walls. This can quickly mean your end, especially if your abilities are still on cooldown. However, you shouldn’t avoid them completely, as there are often boxes there that contain gold or healing.

Swarm is the new PvE mode from League of Legends, which follows a completely different game principle than fans are used to from Riot Games. In total, you can choose between 9 champions. We have listed the best champions for you in a tier list: LoL Swarm: Tier list of the best champions
