LoL: Super-Team fails shortly before the goal – star player Perkz judges: “Embarrassing, shocking, disappointing”

Last minute The world stood up after Putins decision in

In the European professional league LEC at League of Legends, the French team Vitality did not make it into the playoffs. With 4 defeats in a row, the Summer Split 2022 ran against the top-class “Super-Team”. Luka “Perkz” Perković (23) missed the playoffs for the first time – the Croatian was even traded as a candidate for the MVP 2022. Before the decisive games, the team had a 94% chance of making the playoffs.

This is the situation of Perkz, one of the best LoL players in Europe:

  • Croatian Perkz has been the driving force behind the success of G2 Esports for years as a midlaner and ADC: He won 8 championships with G2 and finished second at the 2019 World Championship. After a lucrative foray into the US, he returned to Europe in December 2021 with the aim of building a “new team” there to dominate the league.
  • At Team Vitality he found an organization with lots of money to put together a strong team for him. They bought some of the best players in Europe: top laner Alphari, jungler Selfmade, bot laner Carzzy – all good people.
  • When the strategy failed at the first attempt, Selfmade was exchanged and players from South Korea and China were brought in. Now it seemed to be working, before the decisive phase, week 8, Team Vitality had a 94% chance of making the playoffs – but then everything went wrong.

Team Vitality has a 94% chance to make the playoffs before the final week

This is how the season ended: Amazingly bad. Everything went according to plan until Friday, August 12, when Team Vitality was safely in the playoffs 9-6. Before last week Team Vitality had a 94% chance to reach the playoffs, they had to win only one of their last 3 league games.

But as of Friday 12th August they lost the last 4 games of the season in a row.

The last and decisive game on August 14th was lost by Team Vitality against Excel Esports. That was a tie-breaker for 8th place in the league, the final playoff spot.

Particularly bitter for Perkz: Mikyx, his former support at G2, was decisive for his defeat. The 23-year-old Slovenian turned on Thresh and with good fight openings he was able to lead his team to victory.

A key teamfight at 26 minutes went entirely against Perkz and his team:

Perkz misses the playoffs for the first time in his career

What makes this so tragic? Hardly anyone saw this bankruptcy coming because Team Vitality was actually solid before week 8: in weeks 6 and 7 the team had won 3 out of 4 games, including against G2 Esports.

At the time, Perkz was still being considered a possible league MVP. In an interview he said the last few games have been clear wins, not even close. Perkz have a very good feeling about the summer. (via inven).

But then they lost to SK Gaming, Fnatic and Rogue in a row – slipping down the table and losing the crucial tie-breaker.

This is the first time in Perkz’s career that he has missed the playoffs, as Dotesports knows (via dotesports).

In LoL you change the cult jungler Udyr:

Perkz says: Performance was embarrassing, shocking, disappointing

What does Perkz say? He says (via twitter):

Embarrassed, shocked and disappointed. […] Sorry. This will 1,000% not be my last performance.

Shortly thereafter, he tweeted: Just a joke. I will resign and you will never hear from me again. Take care.

Just perks. Even in his G2 days, he was considered quite a troll.

How are the fans reacting? While Team Vitality has been criticized, many say Perkz played excellently and deserved the win. One hopes that Perkz will come back again.

Last year Perkz went to Worlds and G2 had a disastrous year – this year it’s the other way around, says one fan.

Success in LoL is hard to come by – Even harder to keep

This is behind it: Team Vitality’s example shows that it is not enough to buy strong players together to be successful. There can then be conflicts about who makes the announcements, which lane has the higher priority, which player the team is channeling its resources into.

Apparently LoL teams have to grow, a hierarchy and harmony has to form.

Randomly bought teams don’t work well in other leagues either.

In any case, it seems to be difficult to stay on top in LoL: Even world champion teams like DWG KIA or FunPlus Phoenix, which seemed extremely strong in their time, have failed in the years after their total dominance as the meta changes or as players left the teams.
