LoL Season 14: A new item is particularly strong for AP champions

One AP item in Season 14 of League of Legends particularly stands out. MeinMMO author Fabienne Kissel shares her first impression.

The current Season 14 in League of Legends has some impressive changes in store, and one new item in particular stands out – Stormsurge (German: Sturmblitz). After an evening of playing LoL and watching some matches, I would like to give a little impression of the new AP item.

Stormbolt – A true game changer

What exactly can Stormbolt do and why is it so powerful? The Stormbolt AP item stands out for its strength for AP-based champions in League of Legends thanks to:

  • High Skill Power: 100 ability power
  • Magic Penetration: The 10 magic penetration helps break through the opponent’s MR. Even if the opponents don’t stack MR, every champion inherently has a base magic resistance.
  • Running pace: With an additional movement speed of 5%, it improves the champion’s mobility.
  • Passive – Storm Chaser: Dealing 35% of a champion’s max health as damage within 3 seconds will apply Stormbolt and grant the user 25% movement speed for 2 seconds. 30 second cooldown.
  • Passive – Stormbolt: After 2 seconds, a bolt of lightning strikes the target, dealing 120-260 (based on level) (+40% ability power) (melee) / 90-195 (+30% ability power) (ranged) magic damage. If an enemy dies from the lightning or before it strikes, the lightning immediately explodes, dealing damage to enemy champions in a large area and you receive 30 gold.
  • Storm Bolt is particularly effective for champions who can deal large burst damage in a short amount of time while benefiting from additional movement speed – for example on Fizz, Zoe, Viktor, Syndra, Ahri, Lux, Hwei and also Rumble.

The item also costs 2900 gold, which is cheap for what it can do. The fact that lightning explodes instantly (if an enemy dies from the lightning or dies before it hits) and does AOE damage to enemy champions is also pretty cool. The passive can be compared to Electrocute, only it does more damage and still has the AOE effect described. The additional running speed with the passive allows you to move skillfully out of the fight once you’ve got your burst out – or just pursue your opponents.

But it wasn’t just Stormbolt that caught my attention this season. I’m particularly impressed with Shadowflame’s new passive. Magic Damage and True Damage Critically strikes enemies with less than 35% health, dealing 20% increased damage (increased to 30% increased damage for damage over time and pet effects). For example, on Syndra the item is strong. Do you know when the opponent barely survives despite your burst damage and the ultimate? This doesn’t happen so quickly with Shadow Flame. But also on Rumble together with Sturmblitz.

Please note, this is just a first impression and I definitely need to play a few more matches to get the overall picture, after all we are still at the very beginning of the new season and there are so many new things to try. Overall, I have the feeling that AP champions are currently presented in a very good light, which makes me very happy because, in addition to support, I also like playing AP mages in the midlane.

Overall, I’m impressed with the dynamic these new and changed AP items bring to the current meta.

By removing the mythical items, I feel like you’re no longer on such a fixed path when it comes to item builds. So no item will be excluded anymore because you couldn’t combine two mythic items with each other.

Some AP items, including Storm Bolt, will probably be nerfed again. But until then I’ll definitely enjoy it.

What is your impression of the new season? Feel free to write it to us in the comments.
