Many players would like the popular Arena mode to remain permanent in League of Legends. However, Riot Games has thrown out the game mode for now and explained why they are removing game modes.
What is it about? Riot Games has introduced a variety of new game modes to LoL over the years. Including: Urf, One for All, Hexa Kill, Nexus Siege, Ascension and more. The game modes come back into the game every now and then in a rotating manner – but never remain permanent.
This summer a new game mode was added to the game: Arena. In this mode, four teams of two compete against each other in chaotic 2v2 combat, with the play style changing every few rounds with cool augmentations. In the end only one team wins.
Arena mode was popular among players, but was recently scrapped by Riot Games. The mode is scheduled to return again in December.
But why don’t popular game modes stay in the game permanently? The game producer at Riot Games has now made a statement about this: There is a method behind it.

What was said? Riot Games developer Eduardo Cortejoso has now revealed the reasons for removing popular game modes in a conversation with Polygon.
Arena was part of a larger plan after Riot previously released their disappointing annual cinematic and players were concerned that the game was stagnating.
Riot Games faced some challenges. The balance changes, which were not particularly well received by some players, led to heated discussions – as did the priceless Jhin skin.
Regarding the released Arena mode, he said:
As for Arena, especially with LoL going through a rough patch at the start of the year, we really wanted to use this as an opportunity. Our goal was to regain the trust of the players.

Cortejoso explained that in the past, the decision as to whether a game mode would remain permanent was often based on hours played or purchases per account.
In addition: The developers who worked on many of the previous game modes have now either left Riot or have joined other Riot teams (for example: Teamfight Tactics).
That’s why when the League team launched Arena, they aimed to create a game mode that they could continue to develop until the return. The “next” arena should offer some optimizations and new elements that should inspire players.
Eduardo Cortejoso emphasizes:
When developing game modes, we are increasingly focusing our attention on exploring groups of players that have previously been less considered and on fulfilling previously unmet expectations and motivations.
That’s why we created something new with Arena, in which we specifically target a shorter playing time frame and which is more random-based thanks to the augment system.

Riot hopes to create a broader range of player experiences despite the riskier approach. They intend to continue developing game modes in the coming years.
Cortejoso says they expect to be able to simplify the development processes and learn a lot in the coming years. Therefore, players could expect more innovation from the League of Legends team, especially in the area of game modes.
