LoL: European team was considered a sure loser, only has a 0.6% chance of winning

The World Championship is currently underway in League of Legends. The team G2 Esports (1st place in Europe) recently met Weibo Gaming (4th place in China). Both teams are considered to be about equally strong and proved this over long stretches of their match. But then a fatal mistake occurred and it looked as if the Europeans’ dreams were already buried.

What kind of match was that? G2 Esports and Weibo Gaming both won their first duel in the Swiss tournament system. The winner of the matchup would be just one game away from moving into the knockout phase, while the loser still has to take another detour via the lower bracket.

The match was correspondingly important and G2 made a really good impression at the start. In a team fight in the top plane, they were able to take a 2-1 kill lead and continued to increase their gold lead over time.

At minute 21 they were already over 1,000 gold ahead, had the significantly stronger bot lane and were heading towards the Baron. But that was the first of two bad decisions.

The Chinese team is suddenly almost 10,000 gold ahead

What happened at Baron’s? G2 Esports wanted to quietly defeat the creature and secure the important buff. But they missed a Ward who revealed to the opposing team what their plan was.

Weibo saw, came and won, because they not only stole the Baron buff, but also defeated 4 of the 5 opposing players. A big turning point, because suddenly the Chinese team was able to secure two towers, was ahead in gold and even had a chance for the Dragon Soul, the second important buff.

This is where G2 Esports made the second big mistake. In a very clumsy team fight they lost 4 players again and also the buff to the opposing team.

At minute 26, Weibo dominated with 9,000 gold, 5 towers, and the permanent dragon buff. Even the Western shoutcasters uttered the sentence: “It’s just a question of how Weibo will put the final nail in the coffin.”

According to official statistics, the chance of victory for G2 was now only 0.6%.

G2 doesn’t give up and creates the miracle

How did the match continue? At minute 28, G2 Esports made its first small comeback. They won a team fight and were able to eliminate two enemies. They then got the baron buff, but lost three players to one opponent in the action.

A small victory, but Weibo still had a huge lead.

However, things got even stranger during the battle for the Elder Dragon. Weibo, who were not only stronger but also had the better position and better opening of the fight, were dismantled in a wombo combo by G2.

5 players defeated for 2 own deaths was a good trade. They were also able to get a tower and the buff from the Elder Dragon. From then on everything was balanced again.

The European team now appeared more confident and aggressive. With the entire team, they pressed on the second toplane turret and were so fast that they were even able to destroy the base turret and the inhibitor.

With the last seconds of the Elder Dragon buff, they even got a Nexus Tower and several players from Weibo. But they resisted steadfastly. It became hectic and chaotic.

In a teleport action, Caps tried to destroy the Nexus while the others fought away from the base. But Weibo was able to defeat all players except BrokenBlade. He had to teleport back, which enabled the Chinese team to secure what was now their fourth Baron buff in the game.

Some were already expecting Weibo to make a comeback.

But in a final team fight, Europe was finally able to secure victory. After 38 minutes it was clear: G2 Esports climbed into the 2-0 bracket and is only one win away from the round of 16. You can tie this up today – October 21st from 12:00 p.m. However, they have to play against the tournament favorites Gen.G.
