During one of Nathalie Gustafsson’s work shifts, every train driver’s nightmare happened.
A young boy jumped in front of the train.
– I didn’t have time to think much more than: No, no no, she says.
It was in April 2020 that what Nathalie Gustafsson calls in a viral Facebook post “the most terrible day of her life” happened. A young boy threw himself in front of the train she was driving.
Nathalie was naturally shocked by the incident. But she was not alone in her shock. There was a train attendant on the train who, according to Nathalie, gave her support and help in the vulnerable situation. A support she describes as enormous.
– It is indescribable. This is the worst that can happen. And it is an incredible shock. Then having someone who is with you and can help you is invaluable.
When the accident occurs, there are routines for what the staff on board the train must do. Since Nathalie was in a state of shock, the train conductor pulled a big load in what needed to be done.
– I raised the alarm myself. But you also have to explain to the travelers what has happened. I couldn’t handle it. But he did.
Against all odds, the boy who threw himself in front of the train survived. Something Nathalie is incredibly grateful for.
– He was very lucky. The boy’s mother told a colleague who passed it on to me. It was a huge relief.
Resigned from work
In 2021, the politicians in Stockholm decided that all train attendants in the region should be removed and replaced with cameras. It led to the high-profile commuter train strike that took place recently. For Nathalie, the train attendants are so invaluable that she chose to change jobs when the news came.
– I don’t want to drive without a train conductor. I stand by that.
