Swedish UN diplomat Hans Grundberg is leading the negotiations being held in Jordan. He said three days of talks touched on a first round of negotiations to reopen roads to the mountain town of Taiz, about 250 km from the capital Sanaa.
Taiz’s strategic location and its future status may be crucial to the difficult attempts to achieve peace in Yemen. However, the parties have not left the negotiations in Amman, but it is unclear whether new negotiations will be held.
Yemen has been at war since 2015, a year after the Huthi rebels captured the capital Sanaa. About 3.3 million people have since been forced to flee and the famine is great. The UN has described the situation in Yemen as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.
