It has long been known that humpback whales can communicate over great distances.

Whale song is carried along during humpback whales’ long migrations across the oceans, and researchers have now seen how local songs migrated further across the Pacific Ocean – from the coast of Australia and all the way to Ecuador, Vetenskapsradion reports.

The researchers, whose study was published in the scientific journal Royal Society Open Science, believe that the whales pick up the local melodies of other populations as they move across the oceans.
