Local COVID 19 hospitalizations rise

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Brantford-Brant rose over the weekend.

According to the Brant Community Healthcare System on Monday, there are six people in hospital with COVID-19, with none in critical care. That’s up from the four at the end of last week.

Of the patients admitted to hospital, 119 have been unvaccinated for a rate of 579.24 per 100,000 people, while 149 have been vaccinated for a rate of 133.63/100,000. In ICUs, 16 people were unvaccinated for a rate of 77.88/100,000 and 18 were fully vaccinated for a rate of 16.14/100,000.

Also on Monday, the Brant County Health Unit reported 52 new COVID-19 cases over the past 72 hours, however, that number is likely underreported because of limited testing.

Since the pandemic began in March of 2020, 8,608 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Brantford-Brant, with 8,480 of those resulting in recovered cases.

There are currently 102 active cases in the community but that number is also likely underreported.

There have been 66 COVID-19 deaths reported since the start of the pandemic.

There have been 321,706 total doses of the vaccine administered at vaccination clinics in Brantford-Brant.

In Brantford-Brant, 83.15 per cent of residents aged five and older have received one dose of the vaccine, while 79.86 per cent have received two or more doses.

Walk-in vaccination clinics will be held this week at:

• Lynden Park Mall (near Entrance 4), Brantford, Tuesday through Friday, 11:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm;

• 195 Henry St., Brantford, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm;

• And at the Paris Fairgrounds, Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm

The only outbreak in the area is at John Noble Home (Mohawk Terrace), which was declared March 14 with two residents and one staff member infected.

The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic and Grand Erie district school boards are reporting the percentage of absences for students and staff at each of their schools. As of Friday, there were 11 active COVID cases on Six Nations of the Grand River and 15 people are in self-isolation.

Two people from Six Nations are currently hospitalized with the virus.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,532 confirmed COVID cases on Six Nations.

Exact numbers are not available but 55 per cent of the population has received a dose of the vaccination, with 50 per cent competing in their vaccination series.

There have been 24 COVID-19 deaths on Six Nations since the start of the pandemic.

On Monday, Public Health Ontario reported 551 people in hospital, the lowest total since there were 491 patients in hospital on Dec. 28. There are 181 people in intensive care.

The province reported 1,217 new cases over the past 24 hours although that number is likely underreported due to limited access to testing.

There were four net new COVID-19 deaths reported on Monday and there have now been 12,336 deaths in the province since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020.

Beginning on Monday, masks are no longer mandated in most public settings including retail stores, restaurants, schools, gyms and movie theaters.
