Local COVID-19 hospitalizations remain in single digits

The Brant Community Healthcare System on Thursday reported six people in hospital with COVID-19. That’s up from four on Wednesday. Six COVID patients were reported in hospital on Tuesday.

One COVID patient is currently in intensive care.

Of the patients admitted to hospital, 123 have been unvaccinated for a rate of 598.71 per 100,000 people while 154 have been vaccinated for a rate of 138.11/100,000. In ICUs, 16 people were unvaccinated for a rate of 77.88/100,000 and 18 were fully vaccinated for a rate of 16.14/100,000.

Also on Thursday, the Brant County Health Unit reported 23 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, however, that number is likely underreported because of limited testing.

Since the pandemic began in March of 2020, 8,816 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Brantford-Brant, with 8,609 of those resulting in recovered cases.

There are currently 141 active cases in the community but that number is also likely underreported.

There have been 66 COVID-19 deaths reported since the start of the pandemic.

There have been 322,264 total doses of the vaccine administered at local vaccination clinics. In Brantford-Brant, 83.16 per cent of residents, aged five and older, have received one dose of the vaccine, while 79.96 per cent have received two or more doses.

The health unit announced Thursday that it no longer will provide daily COVID updates. Instead, as of Monday, COVID numbers on its websites will be updated Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday by 11 am COVID-19 vaccine coverage updates will be available each Monday.

Walk-in vaccination clinics will be held this week at:

• Lynden Park Mall (near Entrance 4), Brantford, Thursday and Friday, 11:30 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm

• And at 195 Henry St., Brantford, Thursday and Friday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm

There are currently four outbreaks in high-risk settings. They are: Community Living Brant Facility No. 5, March 28, one resident and one staff member; Riverview Terrace in Brantford, March 28, three residents and one staff member; Sensity in Paris, March 28, three residents and one staff member; and Brierwood Gardens LTCH, March 14, three residents infected.

The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic and Grand Erie district school boards are reporting the percentage of absences for students and staff at each of their schools. As of Monday, there were 15 active cases on Six Nations of the Grand River and 28 people are in self-isolation.

Two people from Six Nations are currently hospitalized with the virus.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,556 confirmed COVID cases on Six Nations.

Exact numbers are not available but 55 per cent of the population has received a dose of the vaccination, with 50 per cent competing in their vaccination series.

There have been 24 COVID-19 deaths on Six Nations since the start of the pandemic two years ago.

On Thursday, Public Health Ontario reported 807 people in hospital, up from 778 on Wednesday and 661 one week ago. There are 166 people in intensive care.

The province reported 3,139 new cases over the past 24 hours although that number is likely underreported due to limited access to testing.

There were six new COVID-19 deaths reported on Thursday, bringing to 12,433 the number of such deaths in the province since the start of the pandemic.
