Local COVID 19 death toll hits 108

The Brant County Health Unit on Tuesday reported two COVID-19 deaths over the past week, bringing the number of local fatalities due to the virus to 108 since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020.

Both victims are men.

One was in his 90s and the other in his 60s.

The older man’s transmission was associated with the Brantford General Hospital B7 outbreak that closed on Nov. 23. He was classified as hospitalized at the time of death.

The younger man’s transmission was associated with the BGH B6 outbreak that closed on Dec. 9. He was classified as not hospitalized at the time of death.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in the area remain the same while new cases have dropped slightly.

According to the Brant Community Healthcare System, as of Tuesday, there are three people receiving care at BGH or the Willett in Paris, with no one in critical care.

The health unit also announced Tuesday that 45 new COVID-19 cases were reported over the past week, although the number is thought to be higher due to limited testing. There were 50 cases reported last week.

There have now been 12,305 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic. Of all the cases, 12,174 have been resolved.

Active cases have decreased from 50 last week to 23 this week.

As for vaccinations, 85 per cent of residents, aged five and older, have received one dose of the vaccine, 82 per cent have received two doses, 49 per cent have received three doses and 22 per cent have received four doses.

The Metrolinx GO-VAXX bus is running vaccine clinics in Brantford on Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm at St. Joseph’s Lifecare Center on Wayne Gretzky Parkway and on Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm at Lynden Park Mall.

There are currently three local outbreaks at long-term care facilities, retirement homes and congregate living setting. Last week there were two.

These are the locations:

  • Brierwood Gardens, Dec. 19, three residents and two staff members;
  • Fox Ridge Care Community, Dec. 19, four residents;
  • Residence on Sheridan, Dec. 12, four residents.

As of Monday, there were eight active cases on Six Nations of the Grand River. No one from Six Nations is currently hospitalized with the virus.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,704 confirmed COVID cases on Six Nations.

Exact numbers are not available but 55 per cent of the population has received a dose of the vaccination, with 51 per cent competing in their vaccination series.

There have been 24 COVID-19 deaths on Six Nations since the start of the pandemic.
