LO chairman visits Northvolt after disclosure about ammonia

Despite high levels of the dangerous gas ammonia, staff at Northvolt were asked to continue working in April.

– It is simply terrible. Workplaces shouldn’t work like this, so it makes me very upset, says LO chairman Johan Lindholm The echo after the revelation.

A Teams message that went out to employees stated that staff were expected to work at up to 500 ppm before the premises were evacuated, according to the radio. The gas ammonia is dangerous at high levels, and therefore the Swedish Work Environment Authority has set a limit of a maximum of 50 ppm (parts per million).

Going to visit the factory

After the revelation, the LO chairman has cleared his calendar to be able to go to Northvolt.

– I will meet protection agents and elected representatives and I will get their view of the issue, Johan Lindholm tells the radio.

During the visit, the LO base will also discuss the working environment with the company’s management.

– I understand that the workers there are afraid, they are afraid of how their workplace is of course and not that it is reported in the media that the company is trying to make it happen. This simply has to stop, he says.
