Liverpool is already running towards the Premier League title in December. Arne Slot’s proteges have won 18 of their 20 matches, including all series.
Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-0 on Sunday and increased the gap to nine points at the top of the English Premier League.
Cody Gakpo and hit from a penalty kick in the second half Mohamed Salah scored the goals of the top match as champions City’s winless streak stretched to seven matches, including all series.
Salah, who was in high spirits, passed the opening goal, which was finished by Gakpo, in the 12th minute.
The four-game losing streak in the Premier League is City’s first since 2008. Pep Guardiola’s the team he coached fell to fifth place in the standings and is already eleven points behind Liverpool.
The victory was deserved for Liverpool, who won the match in expected goals 3.35–0.82, attempts to score 18–8 and shots on goal 7–2.
– City is a fantastic team that is a four-time champion in a row. They have the quality to punish any team. But today we were good in the defensive game and we had great opportunities to score more goals, said the Liverpool top scorer Virgil van Dijk for Sky Sports.
Former England striker Dion Dublin told BBC Radio that “City can never be completely pushed out of the title race, but based on Sunday’s performance they are nowhere near Liverpool’s level”.
– Liverpool is strong in both the defensive and attacking box. Congratulations to the opponent. We’re going to reset this and start all over, as hard as it is to believe. I trust my players and I know what they do in this position. We’ll see what happens by the end of the season, Manchester City coach Guardiola told Sky Sports.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher mentioned to Sky Sports that City are having a “mini-crisis” similar to Liverpool’s a couple of years ago.
– I believe that City will have their hands full to even reach the top four in the series. Especially when I look at Arsenal and Chelsea at the moment. It will be difficult for City to go above these, unless they then enter the player market in January.
