LIVE Tour de France 2024 new golden opportunity for sprinters

After a mountain stage which saw Tadej Pogacar take the yellow jersey on Tuesday, the 2024 Tour de France returns to calm this Wednesday with a 5th stage promised to the sprinters at the finish.

Live

1:00 p.m. – An intermediate sprint and two category 4 passes

There will only be two points awarded in the mountain classification today, with two category 4 passes on the programme today: the côte du Cheval Blanc (at kilometre 104) and the côte de Lhuis (at kilometre 142). In between, an intermediate sprint will be contested in Aosta (at kilometre 123).

12:45 – Vingegaard: “My time, our time will come”

Distanced by Tadej Pogacar during the Galibier stage yesterday, Jonas Vingegaard showed the first signs of weakness in his duel with the Slovenian and is now 50 seconds behind his best enemy in the general classification. But the Dane said he was rather confident for the future: “I had doubts about myself coming into this Tour, I didn’t know where I was at the start, and what we’re achieving is better than we could have hoped for. He (Pogacar, editor’s note) wasn’t much better than me today on the climb. My time, our time will come.”

12:30 – Actual departure given at 1:30 p.m.

The fictitious start of this 5th stage of the Tour de France 2024 will be given at 1:20 p.m. in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, while the real start will be given ten minutes later, at 1:30 p.m. The riders are expected in Saint-Vulbas a little before 5:30 p.m.

12:15 – Pogacar: “Maybe in the top 5”

After voluntarily giving up the yellow jersey to Richard Carapaz on Monday, Tadej Pogacar took up the jersey in style on Tuesday, putting in a great performance in the Galibier and then on the descent to Valloire. It’s his 12th stage victory in five participations in the Tour de France and it’s one of the best, by the man himself: “After the Tour, we’ll see things differently but yes, it’s one of my best, for sure,” admitted the Slovenian after the race. I don’t know, maybe in the top 5.”

12:00 – An update on the general classification

Imperial on Tuesday in the Alps and especially in the Galibier, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) made the difference compared to the other favorites in the general classification. The Slovenian took the yellow jersey and has a 45-second lead over Remco Evenopoel (Soudal-Quick Step) and a 50-second lead over his great rival, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a bike).

11:45 – A stage promised to the sprinters

After a lively 4th stage in the Alps, the peloton will return to flatter roads on the 177.4km 5th stage this Wednesday. Only two small fourth-category passes are listed today on the road between Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Saint-Vulbas, in Ain, which is hosting the Tour for the first time. The teams should decide in a finale that promises to be a bunch sprint.
