14:00 – Some rules about rugby 7s
Rugby 7s is therefore a format with 7 players per team, matches of two halves of 7 minutes each, on a rugby field of the same dimensions as in rugby union. Five changes are possible and the player profiles are obviously not the same.
Rugby 7s is a recent discipline of the Summer Games. Having arrived in 2016, the Olympic tournament in Paris will be the third edition. Rugby 7s is played on the same field as rugby union, and consequently the spaces are much larger. With two halves of seven minutes, the match is also much shorter.
In the last Olympics, Fiji dominated the men’s tournament, winning both gold medals. In the women’s event, Australia won the gold medal in 2016, while New Zealand were Olympic champions in 2021. The French won the silver medal.
For the Paris Games, the two French teams are aiming for the gold medal. To do so, the French, currently the third-ranked nation in the world, will have to beat the Australians and New Zealanders, the tournament favourites. On the men’s side, the team can count on the support of none other than Antoine Dupont. The scrum-half of the French XV has already participated in several tournaments with the VII, with the key being the first success of the French team since 2005 during the round in Los Angeles. So all hopes are allowed. But be careful because France could be eliminated before the opening ceremony. “We try not to think about it at all,” sighs captain Paulin Riva. “Clearly, we don’t want to find ourselves in that situation, even if it’s something that could happen and that we’ll have to deal with. Above all, we want to start very strong and take advantage of this enthusiasm that promises to be extraordinary against the United States.”
When are the Olympic rugby sevens events?
