What are the French willing to sacrifice to be rich? The answer is unexpected.
If you were asked to choose between living rich but stupid and living poor but intelligent, what would you answer? Goliathsthe social investment app, conducted a survey in July among 2,165 people living in France on their relationship with money and their lifestyle.
Participants were presented with a series of rather bizarre choices: “What would you choose between wealth and a short life or living poor to a very old age?”, “What would you choose between wealth but sick or living very healthy but poor?”, “What would you choose between being very stupid but rich or poor and very intelligent?”, “What would you choose between wealth but alone or living poor with someone?”, “What would you choose between being hated but rich or poor and very loved?”…
Have the French always favored money? More than 62% said they would prefer to live less long but with money rather than very old but penniless. This is not the most surprising result: 73% of the French opted for wealth over intelligence. An opinion well summed up by an expression of Paul Laffitte, French financier and writer: “A poor idiot is an idiot, but a rich idiot is rich”. They are also 67% to accept being hated by all for being rich.
However, the French still prioritize certain aspects of their lives over money and are therefore not ready to sacrifice everything for wealth. Health and love are priceless if we are to believe this survey. If 58% of them prefer to live poor but with someone rather than rich and alone, they are also 57% who choose to be in very good health but broke.
According to another study by Goliath at the end of June among 3,105 adults living in France, 82% of French people would like to be rich above all to stop working. 77% dream of wealth to travel, 71% to spoil their family and 69% to invest in projects. To “live the life of their dreams”, 57% of French people believe that they need to earn between 20 and 30 million euros.
