Emmanuel Macron has this time accepted the resignation of Gabriel Attal’s government, presented on Tuesday, July 16 at the end of the day. The outgoing government will remain in charge of dealing with “current affairs” until the appointment of the next Prime Minister. Gabriel Attal has proposed “meetings” to the other political groups to “move towards (an) action pact” with a view to forming a future government. On the left, negotiations are continuing around the designation of a candidate to propose for Matignon. After the rejection by certain members of the New Popular Front (NFP) of several proposals – Huguette Bello, Laurence Tubiana – the communist deputies have proposed that the Prime Minister be appointed by a vote of the NFP elected representatives.

Marine Tondelier says she is “disgusted” by the “leadership war”
The leader of the environmentalists, Marine Tondelier, said on Wednesday that she was “angry” and “disgusted” by the leadership war between the Insoumis and the Socialists to propose a name for Matignon, launching an appeal for the immediate resumption of negotiations that had been stopped “for several days”.
“Every hour, every minute of ridicule that we offer […]we are in the process of manufacturing the RN vote and there will be no point in coming to get me with my green jacket in 2027 between the two rounds to say “Help, we need a republican front” […] “You can’t raise hope and disappoint so much,” she said on France 2.
Communists propose that NFP deputies vote on a prime minister
In a statement published Tuesday evening, the Communist deputies proposed submitting the appointment of a Prime Minister to a vote by the New Popular Front deputies. “We can no longer run the risk of leaving the helm to the President of the Republic and letting discontent gain ground,” they explained.
French Communist Party leader Fabien Roussel welcomed a “wise proposal”. “There is still time”, he judges, while divisions between the NFP allies over the name of a Prime Minister have been worsening in recent days. Several proposals, such as Huguette Bello or Laurence Tubiana, have been rejected by at least one of the members of the electoral alliance.
Macron thanks Attal “infinitely”
In a tweet published Tuesday evening, Emmanuel Macron thanked Gabriel Attal for having put his “energy at the service of the French people”. The President of the Republic accepted the government’s resignation, submitted for the second time on Tuesday, following the early legislative elections of June 30 and July 7.
Gabriel Attal’s government will nevertheless remain in charge of “current affairs until the formation of a new government”, possibly for a few weeks, the head of state explained to his ministers on Tuesday morning.
Op-ed asks NFP leaders to ‘rise to the occasion’
In a Tribune published in the newspaper The world Tuesday evening, a collective of the trade union, associative, artistic and intellectual world asks the leaders of the New Popular Front to show themselves “up to the hopes and expectations of the population”. The signatories, among whom the secretary general of the CGT, Sophie Binet, and the actress Judith Godrèche, call on the left-wing forces “to put an end to partisan divisions” and affirm: “In the event of failure, the disillusionment of the voters would be immense.”
