07/30/24 – 11:56 PM – Good night everyone!

The linternaute team wishes you good night, thank you for following this beautiful day with us.

07/30/24 – 11:31 p.m. – Summary of the day

The image of this Tuesday will undoubtedly be that of Clarisse Agbegnénou frustrated and disappointed as she left the tatami after her semi-final loss against the future Slovenian Olympic champion Andreja Leski. She came to these Games for the Gold, she left with a bronze medal, and no one in the media, the public or her entourage expected this failure. Because it is indeed a failure that it is considering this tactical error 15 seconds from the end which offered a shido to her opponent. Also considering the past against this same Slovenian before the Games, 5 victories in 5 matches. Also considering her dream of retaining her Olympic title in front of her family and in front of her daughter in Paris. The bronze medal acquired against the Austrian Piovesena will be little consolation. A medal that still makes her the most decorated French judoka at the Olympics.

The other big disappointment of the evening was the silver medal of the women’s fencing épée team. Victory was not far away with this cruel defeat in sudden death 29-30. The regrets are of course there, but the quartet composed of Auriane Mallo-Breton, Coraline Vitalis, Marie-Florence Candassamy and Alexandra Louis Marie offered the Grand Palais audience a beautiful show during their lovely run to the final. The small point that separates them from the Italians shows that they were not far from perfection.

We will probably have to wait until tomorrow to see gold medals from the French delegation and it is Léon Marchand who invites us to watch his wonderful show in two parts. The 200m butterfly and the 200m breaststroke. Long hesitant about the possibility of doubling these two races at the Olympics, the Toulousain showed today twice that the sequence is nothing extraordinary. The series showed that it is feasible with good effort management. The semi-finals confirmed that it is possible even with a significant energy expenditure. Marchand deployed well to win the semi-finals brilliantly far ahead of his main opponents. He once again offered the wonderful public of the Aquatic Center a stunning demonstration of his wonderful talent.

Young kayaker Titouan Castryck (19 years old) also has talent to spare. He dominated his kayak slalom series today in Vaires, beating Olympic champion Prskavec by 3 seconds. The Frenchman hopes to imitate Gestin (Olympic champion yesterday in canoe slalom) but he remains cautious before the semi-finals and the final on Thursday. His shoulder injury has not completely gone away.

The honors of the evening went to American star Simone Biles, Olympic team champion with her national team. The multiple Olympic medalist gave her best performances on the vault table, uneven bars and floor. Her slight imbalance error on the beam had no impact on the overall standings as the United States put a big gap in front of Italy and Brazil.

In team sports, four French teams continued their flawless run in the tournament. The volleyball team dominated Canada (3 sets to 0) and will face Slovenia for first place with full confidence. The handball players stepped up their game again by sweeping Brazil (26-20). Like Thierry Henry’s Les Bleus who had a clean sweep in the first round by winning comfortably against New Zealand (3-0). They had a great quarter-final against Argentina in Bordeaux on Friday. But it was the basketball team that gave us the most thrills by reversing a very bad scenario against the surprising Japanese (80-84 with 16 seconds to go) before winning in overtime.

In tennis, we will unfortunately note the elimination of Diane Parry and the pair Monfils/Roger Vasselin, while Moutet benefited from Struff’s withdrawal. A withdrawal that is also becoming more and more clear for Kevin Mayer who estimated his chances of participating in the decathlon at 10%.

07/30/24 – 11:20 PM – Something strong for Mallo-Breton

Auriane Mallo-Bréton returned to the silver medal of the Blues in the team épée final “The girls worked hard to put a smile back on my face. Two sudden deaths are complicated, but we gave it our all all day. If we had been told that we would end up with a medal around our necks, we would have taken it. Taking on the Koreans right away, world champions and Olympic vice-champions in Tokyo, we had to do it. The Polish were not easy to beat. We knew how to be strong, it didn’t happen… The throw-in… It’s complicated, mentally it was big matches all day. We’re going to enjoy it all together, it’s something strong. It’s the medal of an entire group.”

07/30/24 – 10:58 p.m. – Quarter-finals known

The posters for the quarter-finals of the men’s football tournament are known:

All meetings will take place on Friday, August 2nd
