With 65 medals (17 gold, 24 silver and 24 bronze), France was overtaken by Italy in the medal rankings and finds itself sixth, but the objective of the Top 8 should be reached this weekend.

Big day on Saturday awaits the French delegation with real chances of medals. Alexandre Leauté will start as favorite in the C2 road race, as will the French relay in handbike. Judoka Hélios Latchoumanaya can aim for gold in the -90kg category, Cyril Jonard will be one of the outsiders in the same competition. Rémy Boullé wants to finish on the podium of Canoe KL1 while Lucas Didier will be in the semi-finals of class 9 para-table tennis.

For once, the medal haul wasn’t good enough for the French team on this 9th day of the Paralympic Games. Two silver medals and two bronze medals, it’s not a lot but it’s still not bad. As has often been the case in recent days, it was para-cycling that offered the best haul to the French delegation. Kevin Le Cunff, who won the C4-5 time trial 2 days ago, came very close to a double in the road race. He was beaten by the Ukrainian Dementyev in the last 10 meters. This will leave the Frenchman (2nd) with some regrets, having launched his sprint a little too early. His compatriot Heïdi Gaugain had the same outcome, finishing at the same time as the legendary Sarah Storey in the women’s road race. Another silver medal for the 19-year-old cyclist from Laval, who has won three in total at these Paralympic Games. Before 3 more chances for medals tomorrow, para-cycling has offered 25 medals to France at these Games, or more than a third of the total.
One man’s misfortune is another man’s gain and in the category B road race, the derailment in the last descent of the De Carvalho-Guichard tandem allowed Alexandre Lloveras and Yoann Paillot to grab a nice bronze medal. In para-swimming, Emeline Pierre snatched third place by two hundredths in the 100m backstroke S10, five days after winning the title in the 100m freestyle in the category.
Flag bearer Nanentin Keita qualified for her 400m T13 final, as did Sofia Pace in the 400mT38 category. The big disappointments of the day came from Nathan Petit (5th in para-judo) and multiple Olympic medallist Souhad Ghazouani 7th in powerlifting. The wheelchair tennis doubles duo of Cattaneo and Houdet melted away against the Spanish pair after a victorious first set.

A few minutes before the break, the Netherlands and Canada are back to back in the wheelchair basketball semi-final (33-33)

South African athlete Simone Kruger won the F38 discus throw with a throw of 38.70m, ahead of China’s Li 38.64m and Colombia’s Saldarriaga Hernandez 38.36m.

Karolina Kucharzyk won the women’s T20 long jump competition with a jump of 5.82m. She finished ahead of Brazil’s de Silva (5.76m) and Turkey’s Altin (5.73m).

Beautiful gold medal for Yasin Khosravi in the men’s F57 shot put with a throw of 15.96m. He finished ahead of the Brazilian Paulino Dos Santos (15.06m) and the Indian Hothoze Sema (14.65m). The Frenchman Kavakava finished the competition in seventh place with a throw of 12.99m

In the T51 category, it was the Canadian Coddy Fournie who won the 100 meters in 19’63” ahead of the Belgian Genyn (20’47”) and the Finn Pispanen (21’14”)

In men’s wheelchair basketball, the French team lost today to Spain 72-57. They ultimately finished 8th in the tournament.

China confirmed its status as the new dominant wheelchair nation by winning the mixed 4x100m universal relay in 45’07” (Hu, Zhou, Wang, Wen). Great Britain was second ahead of the United States in third.

The goal for these 2024 Paralympic Games is quite high for the French delegation, which hopes to break all records as for the Olympic Games. “The goal is mainly gold medals, because that’s what counts most in the table of nations,” recalls Marie-Amélie Le Fur.[…] I was asked if this was not a discounted ambition compared to the Olympic top 5. But we had so neglected performance, we have come a long way. We were 14th in Tokyo; aiming for the top 8 means doubling the number of gold medals, so a real ambition” said Marie-Amélie Le Fur, president of the French Paralympic Committee. As a reminder, in 2021, the French Paralympic delegation won 54 medals, including eleven Olympic titles.
