Lithuania and Latvia ban the broadcast of Russian channels

The Russian war against Ukraine is being waged on its territory, but also in the media. Disinformation is a weapon used by Moscow to subjugate Kiev and deceive its people about the real situation in Ukraine.

Several Russian and Belarusian state television channels are now banned from broadcasting in the Baltic countries, where a large Russian-speaking population still lives, for several years.

In Lithuania, the Rossija 24 channel, for example, is banned from broadcasting for five years. Six television channels in total are affected by this exclusion. In Latvia, the Rossija RTR channel is banned from the screens for the same period.

Broadcasts already banned during the annexation of Crimea

For the regulatory authorities, these channels broadcast propaganda and call for war. In view of the urgent situation, the ban takes effect immediately. In the past, the Baltic authorities had already banned their broadcast for similar reasons, especially after the annexation of Crimea. But today, this propaganda has a concrete effect, a massive attack against Ukraine, notes the Estonian regulator. And for this reason, the ban could be pronounced for several years.
