List of all 45 runes and what they do

With the first expansion “Vessel of Hatred” rune words come to Diablo 4. We have summarized which ones there are and what they do in a list here on MeinMMO.

What are rune words? Diablo 4 will soon have runes that you can combine to create so-called rune words. There are three rarity levels for runes: magical, rare and legendary. The higher the rarity of a rune, the more powerful its effects.

Unlike in Diablo 2, a rune word in Diablo 4 consists of only two runes: a ritual rune and an invocation rune:

  • Runes of Ritual: collects offerings with certain conditions
  • Runes of Invocation: consumes offerings to grant a powerful effect
  • You can only put two runes in the sockets of your equipment and generally only in items that have two sockets (chest armor, leg armor, head armor, two-handed weapons). You can only use runewords if you own Vessel of Hatred.

    Diablo 4: All runes and their effects

    The runes of ritual set conditions that create “offerings” that you need for the runes of invocation. Runes of invocation then consume these offerings to activate their effects.

    Rune words allow you to use skills from other classes. There are 17 runes of ritual and 28 runes of invocation.

  • Deal damage after not taking damage for 5 seconds. (Resets to invulnerable state).

  • Use the Killcaller’s Vile Iron Maiden, which blocks damage from enemies and heals you when they die.

  • Your next non-base skill consumes all of your primary resource to deal up to 100% more damage.
  • Zec, rare:

  • Reduces the cooldown of your ultimate skill by 4 seconds.
  • Ner, rare:

  • Use Hunter’s Counter-Veiling to gain evasion chance, movement speed, become unstoppable, and gain stealth.
  • Mot, rare:

  • Gain a shadow from Hunter’s Dark Veil, reducing your damage taken per shadow.

  • Replaces your next Evasion with Wizard’s Teleport, allowing you to travel a greater distance, deal damage, and become unstoppable.

  • Function, production and location of the runes

    How do runes work? In Diablo 4, runes work through the “Offerings” resource system. You generate them by fulfilling the conditions of the Rune of Ritual. The “Offerings” are in turn used for the Runes of Invocation to activate effects.

    Example: With the Bac rune of ritual, you collect 50 offerings for every 5 meters your character moves. The Jah rune of invocation replaces evasion with teleportation and consumes 500 offerings.

    You can create a surplus by creating more offerings than are needed. The surplus causes some invocation runes to apply a bonus to their effects.

    Where do I get runes? You get runes of every rarity as drops from monsters all over Sanctuary. You can also craft runes yourself by “trading” certain runes at the jeweler. You can also craft mythic items with runes and a magnificent spark. Runes are also tradable and stackable.

    The runes come with “Vessel of Hatred” in Diablo 4 and are only available to you if you own an edition of the expansion.
