Lindt’s dark chocolate bars contain large amounts of lead.
It shows an investigation of the company’s products in the United States, which led to a lawsuit against the Swiss chocolate manufacturer.
Now the company is forced to admit that their chocolate is not actually “made of the highest quality with the finest ingredients”.
In an attempt to have a lawsuit dismissed, lawyers for Swiss chocolate maker Lindt have admitted that the company’s chocolate is not actually “made with the finest ingredients,” reports Daily Mail.
It all started with a survey of several popular chocolate brands conducted by the independent organization Consumer Reports 2022. Among other things, the investigation was able to show that two varieties of Lindt’s chocolate bars contained large amounts of lead and cadmium respectively. None of the substances is preferable for the functioning of the body, lead can be passed on to the fetus and cause major problems for the body, while cadmium is known to be carcinogenic.
American consumers were frustrated by the results of the survey and that they were paying more money for a chocolate that promised higher quality, so a lawsuit against the company was initiated.
“Excessive advertising”
Now the chocolate manufacturers’ lawyers admit that the words “excellence” and “made of the highest quality with the finest ingredients” that are printed on the packaging of the chocolate bars are about “excessive advertising” in an attempt to remove the mood. The district court in New York, which is handling this case, did not approve the lawyers’ attempt.
Despite the lawyers’ statement about excessive advertising, the company wants to clarify that it was presented as a legal response and not as an acknowledgment of the quality of the products.
Lindt has commented on the lawsuit, telling AFP that the company does not agree with all the allegations in the US lawsuit.
“Our quality and safety procedures at Lindt & Sprüngli ensure that all products comply with all applicable safety standards and declaration requirements and are safe to consume,” the company stated.
TV4 Nyheterna has contacted the Swedish division of Lindt for a comment.
