Four ethical advice in the Nordic countries Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland calls for a restriction on the number of children per germ cell donor.

In a joint statement with neighboring countries, SMER (State Medical Council) writes that the increasing demand for sperm and egg donation across borders in Europe, which raises several ethical and legal issues. Demand has in turn led to an increased dependence on commercial egg and sperm banks, including in Denmark.

Most countries have national laws that limit the number of children that an individual donor can cause, but international regulation is lacking. This means that a donor in theory can give rise to hundreds of children.

In its joint statement, the four Nordic ethical councils urge an international restriction.
