Lifting European sanctions against Syria

Lifting European sanctions against Syria

After the United States’s surprise announcement last week, it is the European Union’s turn to lift its sanctions on Tuesday 20 May against Syria. The EU had already started to lighten its sanctions since the fall of Bashar El-Assad, but it was a progressive and reversible lifting. This Tuesday, the foreign ministers gathered in Brussels decided to remove all economic sanctions. “We want to help the Syrian people rebuild a new Syria, inclusive and peaceful,” said the head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas.
