Life saving donation To donate his kidney to his mother

Sevgi Aydın (49) is married and has 3 children. Sevgi Aydın, who lives in Pendik, Istanbul, had been on dialysis for 1 year due to kidney failure. The donation that saved the life of Sevgi Aydın, whose psychology was worn out during this period, came from her daughter Gülsüm Aydın (21).

“I LOSE 15 KG IN 3 WEEKS FOR MY MOTHER”

Gülsüm Aydın, who lost 15 kilos for her mother, said, “My mother has been on dialysis for a year. His psyche was not in good shape. He was too introverted. Seeing my mother like this, I wanted to donate my kidney without thinking. When we first applied, due to my young age and my weight, I was not welcomed. I was ambitious in 3 weeks and I dropped from 105 kilos to 90 kilos. I lost about 15 kilos. Psychologically, I thought if I could remove this surgery. In this process, I never showed my pain to my mother. I overcame this pain by seeing my mother’s happiness after her kidney transplant. It is an indescribable feeling to see my mother’s happiness.” she said.

“ORGAN DONATION IS VERY INSUFFICIENT”

Making a statement after the surgery, Istanbul Okan University Hospital General Surgery Specialist and Head of Organ Transplantation Department Prof. Dr. Alp Gürkan said, “Unfortunately, we use living relatives as donors, since organ donation after brain death is very insufficient in our country. Operating these healthy people imposes a separate responsibility on us. In order to save the health and even the life of their relatives, we should not do any harm to these self-sacrificing people who lie on the operating table even though they have no health problems. For this reason, we examine these people from head to toe, so to speak. We do not accept them as donors in case of the slightest possibility of harming them. This is why we reject almost 30% of donors who apply to us.

IN 1 WEEK, BOTH MOTHER AND DAUGHTER DISCHARGED

Obesity, diabetes, hypertension are important diseases that lead to kidney failure. Ms. Gülsüm was also a very young and overweight donor candidate. Being a nurse, she was knowledgeable and conscious about both herself and her mother’s condition. First of all, we did not accept him as a donor because of his excess weight. However, her mother was very worn out both physically and psychologically on dialysis. He was also very willing to donate a kidney to his mother.

We said to lose weight in 6 months, lose at least 15 kilos, then reevaluate. However, in a short time like 15 days, he went down to the appropriate body mass index level to lose these pounds and become a donor. Yet we hospitalized and observed, she continued to lose weight. We discussed the post-council situation and approved as a donor and performed the surgery. We transplanted the kidney, which we removed with the closed method, to its mother. We discharged both mother and daughter to their home in one week in good health. Gülsüm promised us that she would lose weight after the operation. Thus, she not only saved her mother, but also saved herself from the diseases that obesity would bring by weakening,” she said.
