A Libyan coast guard boat quickly approached and crashed into a boat carrying approximately 50 immigrants off the Libyan coast in the Mediterranean. After the crash, approximately 50 immigrants in the sinking boat fell into the sea, and the immigrants had to swim to the nearby coast guard ship. It was announced that no loss of life was reported following the incident.
While immigrants, mostly African, have been trying to reach European shores via Libya due to insecurity and chaos in the country since the regime of ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi, who was killed in Libya, Libya has become the dominant transit point for immigrants seeking a better life in Europe in recent years.
