Appeared in several European countries, Lidl’s low-cost electrically assisted mountain bike is causing a stir.

Accustomed to playing troublemakers in very popular markets (connected watches, smartphoneshome automation, household appliances, etc.), Lidl could not logically ignore the electric bike. After a Colorado Bull city model found in particular in Belgium at 1,149 euros, the German brand has thrown a stone into the water with an electric mountain bike Zündapp Z801 sold off at 900 euros instead of 2,099 euros. The promotion displayed is very substantial for this electric mountain bike hardtail 27.5 inch frame aluminum to the basic technical sheet. The 250W motor integrated into the rear hub develops 35 Nm of torque, which is enough for off-road riding but too tight for slightly technical climbs on tracks or trails. Besides, the tires with a very rolling profile do not at all suggest committed mountain biking. The 418 Wh battery is supposed to provide 30 to 125 km of range depending on the assistance mode used and the terrain borrowed.
Not the deal of the century
For the rest, the Zündapp Z801 is equipped with a Shimano groupset with a Tourney 21 derailleur gears and SL-M315 Rapid Fire shifter as well as Tektro disc brakes. One LCD screen on the handlebars broadcasts the usual information: assistance mode, battery level, speed, distance… On the scale, this VTTAE displays 22.7 kg. At 900 euros, this electric mountain bike Lidl is not the deal of the century but an honest proposition.
Unfortunately, French consumers will not be able to take advantage of it. We contacted the Lidl press service, which confirmed that the Zündapp Z801 will not be marketed in France. The brand also told us that it did not plan to market any electric bikes in France this year.
