The UN mission in Libya called on Friday, August 9, for “de-escalation and to avoid further tensions”, after the movements of troops of Marshal Haftar, the strongman of eastern Libya, towards an area in the southwest of the country. Libya remains deeply divided and remains controlled by two rival governments. The armed forces affiliated with the government of Tripoli, recognized by the UN, but whose mandate ended at the end of 2022, have raised their level of alert in the southwest of the country, preparing for a “possible attack” by the forces led by Khalifa Haftar. The situation in this area remains very tense.
