Several elderly people have been victimized by fraudsters who pretended to work in libraries.
The police are now issuing a warning: Hang up!
During the first days of the year, the police have received several police reports from people in the Stockholm area who have been exposed to telephone scams.
The fraudster on the other end of the phone has pretended to work at a library and said that the library should refund the amount for loan books that could not be delivered and then asked for access to the person’s bank account.
According to the newspaper Mitti, one person got rid of just over half a million kroner.
Several libraries have issued warnings on their sites, including Järfälla and Sundbyberg.
– I have reported it to the police and we urge everyone who is contacted to make a police report as soon as possible, says Henrika Åström, library director in Sundbyberg to Mitti.
The police call for vigilance:
“Regardless of whether someone calls or contacts you via email or SMS, you should not act on the instructions. Hang up, you don’t have to be nice,” says Johan Halling of the fraud section in Stockholm on the police’s website.
